Eastcott Councillor Dave Wood has received complaints from local residents of Council staff clogging up their streets with smoke. Cllr Wood has called upon the Council to remind its staff of this policy, and upon political leaders to make sure Councillors set a good example.

Cllr Wood says: "The Council has committed to a 'smoke free Swindon' by 2007, but the Conservative administration has been failing to monitor the situation in their own back yard."

Cllr Wood continued "It is grossly unfair for residents in streets surrounding the council offices to have to walk through a cloud of cigarette smoke created by council officers and elected members. As a smoker myself, I appreciate the desire to smoke during coffee breaks and at lunch times. But I would call upon all staff and indeed fellow councillors to abide by the adopted smoking policy of using the provided shelters and not to light-up as soon as they exit the civic office building."

Cllr Wood has also called upon Tory Leader Cllr Bluh and Labour Leader Cllr Small to remind their Councillors to follow these rules.

The Council has committed to creating a 'Smoke Free Swindon' by 2007
